Lebenslauf

Alessio Elia zählt zu den originellsten Komponisten unserer Generation (la Repubblica, Universal Music Publishing, Universal Edition, Muzsika, Radio Vaticana, RAI Radio 3, Die Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung).
Er erhielt Kompositionsaufträge vor allem von I Solisti del Teatro alla Scala di Milano (Octet) das wurde von Warner Classics im Jahr 2018 unter der Leitung von Andrea Vitello und Universal Music Publishing - EMB auf CD veröffentlicht; Radio Bartók (Orchesterstück Trasparenze) für die ARTRIUM-Reihe des Nationalen Ungarischen Rundfunkorchesters; Alter Ego Ensemble - Manuel Zurria, Francesco Dillon und Emanuele Torquati - (L'impermanenza della Memoria - für das Festival Ligeti 100) für ein Projekt mit Auftragsarbeiten von Peter Eötvös, Toshio Hosokawa, Peter Ablinger, Lukas Ligeti, László Sáry und Howard Skempton; UMZE (Ekpyrotic Suicide) das von Bártok gegründete historische Ensemble; Oggimusica Festival in Lugano (Traces from Nowhere); Wiener Collage mit den Solisten der Wiener Philharmoniker (Outskirts of matter); Stuttgart Kammerchor unter der Leitung von Frieder Bernius (Incantesimi di Merseburg) und Celestial keys für Chor und Orchester für das Festival "Ligeti 100" in Auftrag gegeben.

Er war Gastkomponist und –forscher an der Liszt Academy in Budapest, der University of Debrecen, der Kodály Institute in Kecskemét, der Sacher Foundation in Basel und an der Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, wo er 2010 auch Dozent für Komposition war.

Seine Musik wird weltweit an wichtigen Orten aufgeführt [Auditorium Parco della Musica di Roma, Festival Menuhin in Oslo, Festival Mahler in Budapest, Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Levinsalen und Lindemansalen in Oslo, Mannheimer Kunstverein,  LAC - Lugano Arte e Cultura Auditorium, Studios des ungarischen Nationalradiosenders, Forum Neue Musik – Palais Prinz Carl in Heidelberg, Bartóksaal des Művészetek Palotája (Kunstpalast), Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy, BMC – Budapest Music Center, Auditorium del Parco di Renzo Piano in L’Aquila, Arnold Schoenberg Center Wien, Oggimusica Festival in Lugano, Contemporary Arts Festival Budapest; Yamaha Concert Hall Wien: Festival Nuova Consonanza in Rome; Dresden Kulturpalast, etc.]

Elia hat für mehrere Radio- und Fernsehsender Interviews über seine Musik veröffentlicht, u.a.:  Bartók Radio (Ungarn), Magyar Televízió und Duna TV, RAI Radio 3 (Italien); Radio Vaticana, Muzsika –  die wichtigste ungarische Zeitschrift für klassische Musik, Musica +, RAI Radio 3 Suite, RAI Cultura, sowie für das Budapest Music Centre und die Peter Eötvös Stiftung.

Sein Schaffen als Komponist und Musikforscher führte ihn zu einer Reihe wichtiger Symposien und Konferenzen
in verschiedensten Institutionen ganz Europas (u.a. Norwegen, Ungarn, Deutschland, Dänemark, Italien oder Frankreich). Zu den wichtigsten zählen die Cité de la Musique in Paris, das Internationale Musikinstitut in Darmstadt, die Accademia Filarmonica Romana, die Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Canal C2 an der Université de Strasbourg, die Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim, die Hungarian Academy of Arts, die Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, die Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, die University of Performing Arts Prague, sowie insbesondere die Internationale Kulturfabrik Kampnagel in Hamburg, wo er 2012 während des Symposiums „Ligeti und die Mikrotonalität", welches von Ligetis Sekretärin Louise Duchesneau geleitet wurde, referierte. Als außerordentlicher Beitrag des Symposiums galt der Diskurs Paul Griffths’, des ersten Ligeti-Biographen.

Seit 2006 widmen sich Musiker auch ausschließlich seinem Schaffen. So gab es in Budapest, Oslo, Mannheim und Rom mittlerweile zehn seiner Musik gewidmete Konzerte. Als wichtigste Veranstaltungsorte sind hier die Accademia Filarmonica Romana, die Gesellschaft „SHE LIVES", welche den Komponisten Alessio Elia, Péter Eötvös und Zoltán Jeney jeweils ein Konzert in Rom widmete,  
der Verdi-Saal des Italienischen Kulturinstituts in Budapest im Rahmen des Festivals „Contemporanea", welches neben Alessio Elia, den italienischen Komponisten Ivan Fedele und Luciano Berio gewidmet war, sowie die Lindemansalen und die Levinsalen in Oslo.

Seine gegenwärtigen Kompositionen werden von der Stringtheorie, der M-Theorie und der Quantenmechanik inspiriert. Einige seiner Werke befassen sich mit der Integration verschiedener Stimmsysteme in einem Prozess der Entwicklung akustischen Materials, den er „Polysystemismus“ nennt und den er bei vielen Konferenzen präsentiert hat, u. a. bei der Cité de la Musique im Centre de documentation de la musique contemporaine in Paris.
Das in diesem Sinne bedeutungsstärkste Werkes sind Beyond Perturbative States, Conifold transition, Traces from Nowhere, Incantesimi di Merseburg und die Orchesterstücke Rejtett dimenziók (Versteckte Dimensionen), Implicate Inklings (Klarinettenkonzert) und Trasparenze.
Artikel und Essays zum Polysystemismus wurden im deutschen Bockel-Verlag, der Université de Strasbourg und
der Ungarischen Akademie der Künste sowie in einer Masterarbeit am Konservatorium der italienischen Schweiz in Lugano veröffentlicht.

Er wurde mit vielen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Darunter im September 2013 gewann er den ersten Preis für sein Orchesterstück Rejtett dimenziók (Versteckte Dimensionen) beim Wettbewerb der International UMZF 2013 unter der Jury-Leitung von Péter Eötvös.
2005 erhielt er auch den Merit Award von Chigiana Academy für das Stück Luminescences.

Am 28. Mai 2023, anlässlich des 100. Geburtstages von György Ligeti, erscheint Elias Buch The Hamburgische Konzert“ by György Ligeti, die umfassendste und vollständigste Analyse zu diesem Werk. Das von Edition Impronta herausgegebene Buch enthält die vollständige Überarbeitung der Partitur und die Korrektur der zahlreichen Fehler (über 300), die in der gedruckten Partitur, einschließlich der Instrumentalstimmen, und im Manuskript enthalten sind. Zwei unveröffentlichte Sätze des Konzerts, die Alessio Elia in der Sacher-Stiftung (Sammlung Ligeti) gefunden hat, werden zusammen mit allen vorbereitenden Skizzen erstmals in dem Buch veröffentlicht. Am selben Tag (28. Mai 2023) findet im Budapester Musikzentrum die Uraufführung des Hamburgischen Konzerts nach Alessio Elias Revision statt, mit dem Concerto Budapest Ligeti Ensemble unter der Leitung von Peter Eötvös.


Seit 2024 ist er Gastprofessor für Komposition an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Mannheim.

Er ist 1979 in Rom geboren und hat in verschiedensten europäischen Städten gewohnt (Budapest, Oslo, Odense, Debrecen, Berlin).
Er lebt in Budapest und Rom.

Neben seiner italienischen Staatsbürgerschaft ist er seit 2021 auch ungarischer Staatsbürger.



AUSBILDUNG

Seine internationalen Studien führten ihn nach Italien, Ungarn, Norwegen und Deutschland. Er machte sein Abschluss in Komposition bei Giovanni Piazza an der S. Cecilia Academy in Rom mit Aufenthalten an der Chigiana Academy in Siena, dem Internationalen Musikinstitut Darmstadt bei Brian Ferneyhough, Toshio Hosokawa und Georg Friedrich Haas sowie der Liszt Academy in Budapest bei Zoltán Jeney. Einen Postmaster (Zusatzstudium) in Komposition erwarb er an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim bei Sidney Corbett. Wichtig für seine musikalische Ausbildung waren auch häufige Begegnungen mit dem norwegischen Komponisten Lasse Thoresen. Seinen Abschluss erlangte er an der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim in der Kompositionsklasse von Sidney Corbett, selbst Schüler Ligetis und seinen Doktortitel an der Universität von Rom „Tor Vergata“ mit einer Dissertation über Ligetis Hamburgisches Konzert.

L’altro volto della scuola di Darmstadt : Messiaen, Ligeti (The other face of the Darmstadt School: Messiaen, Ligeti).
The book is about those aspects that are very far from the serialism, integral serialism and structuralism,
features usually connected to the Darmstadt School and offers another point of view of the very famous Ferienkurse. The choice of Messiaen and  Ligeti, as prominent figures, comes from the necessity to focalize on those languages that can explain better the proposed subject.

In February he completes with full marks the postgraduate studies in composition at the Hochschule für Musik Mannheim, studying with Sidney Corbett.

In the number of July, "Muzsika" publishes a very positive critic by Szabolcs Molnár of Elia's orchestral piece "Trasparenze".

In the number MMXIV/I (March) "Dal Szerző" (the official magazine of the Hungarian Bureau for the Protection
of Authors' Rights) publishes a long interview with Elia, realized by Marcell Németh.

In the concert programme of the Eighth Portrait Concert dedicated to Elia, the Italian critic Guido Barbieri writes
a very positive and original interpretation of the sound and music of Elia.

On 2nd June the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica" realised an interview with Péter Eötvös talking about Elia's music.

On 10 February the German newspaper "Die Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung" publishes the announcement of the second German performance of "Dimensioni nascoste" (Versteckte Dimensionen).

On 13 February the German newspaper "Die Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung" publishes an enthusiastic review of the
second German performance of "Dimensioni nascoste" (Versteckte Dimensionen).

On 13 February the German newspaper "Mannheimer Morgen" publishes an enthusiastic review of the first
German performance of "Dimensioni nascoste" (Versteckte Dimensionen).

On 14 April he is interviewed by Szabolcs Molnár in a programme of the Hungarian "Klub Rádió".

On 28 April appears in "9 Colonne" (the official National Italian Newspaper of the Italian Ministry of Foreign
Affairs) an enthusiastic review of Elia's music.

On 10 May appears in "PlayLiszt" a very positive critic and review by Szabolcs Molnár of the 7th Portrait Concert dedicated to
Alessio Elia's music. The concert was held at Sala Verdi of the Italian Institute of Culture in Budapest within the concert series "Contemporanea", a three-concert festival dedicated to Ivan Fedele, Luciano Berio and

THEORETICAL WORKS
On May 28, 2023, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of György Ligeti, Elia's book The "Hamburgisches Konzert" by György Ligeti has been released, the most exhaustive and complete analysis on this work.
Published by Edition Impronta, the book includes the complete revision of the  score and the correction of the numerous errors (over 300) present in the printed score, including instrumental parts, and in the manuscript.
Two unpublished movements of the Concerto, found by Alessio Elia at the  Sacher Foundation (Ligeti Collection), together with all the preparatory   sketches are published for the first time in the book.
On the same date (May, 28, 2023) the first performance of the Hamburgisches Konzert based on Alessio Elia's revision took place at the Budapest Music Center, with the Concerto Budapest Ligeti Ensemble conducted by Peter Eötvös.
